How to Prepare for a Junk Removal Appointment

You've booked a junk removal pickup. Now what? The honest answer is: not much. A good crew does the work — that's what you're paying for. But there are a handful of things you can do in the ten minutes before we pull up that make the job faster, cheaper, and less stressful for everyone.
Here's what actually matters, based on doing this every day across the Oklahoma City metro.
1. Decide what stays before we arrive
You don't need to move anything. Moving it is our job, and we'd rather you didn't hurt yourself dragging a sleeper sofa across the garage. But you should know what's going and what isn't.
The slowest jobs are always the ones where we're asking "this too?" every ninety seconds. A quick mental walkthrough beforehand fixes that. On bigger jobs, some people put a strip of blue painter's tape on anything staying. Takes five minutes and removes all ambiguity.
If you're doing a garage or estate cleanout and genuinely aren't sure about some items, just tell us when we arrive. We'll set those aside in one spot instead of loading them, and you can decide at the end.
2. Text us a photo the day before
This is the single most useful thing you can do, and almost nobody does it. Junk removal is priced by volume — how much space your stuff takes up in the trailer. A photo lets us size the load accurately before we leave the shop.
That matters for two reasons. First, you get a real number instead of a range. Second, we show up with the right trailer. If you've got a full garage and we roll in expecting a couch, somebody's making a second trip.

3. Clear a path — but only if it's easy
We'll go wherever the junk is: upstairs bedrooms, basements, attics, back sheds, the far corner of the yard. That's included. But if there's an easy way to open up the route between the items and the door, it speeds things up.
- Unlock the gate if the item is in the backyard
- Move cars out of the driveway so we can back the trailer close
- Prop the storm door or garage door open
- Put pets in a back room — this is for their safety more than ours, since we're carrying heavy things through doorways
None of this is required. If you're elderly, disabled, or just not up to it, skip all of it. We handle houses where the owner never leaves their chair.
4. Understand how the pricing actually works
Almost all reputable junk removal is priced by volume, not by weight or by hour. We quote based on how much of the trailer your load fills — quarter, half, three-quarter, full.
A few things affect that number:
- Volume — the main driver. Bulky-but-light items like mattresses and patio furniture cost more than their weight suggests.
- Access — a third-floor apartment with no elevator takes longer than a curbside pile.
- Special disposal — refrigerators and freezers need certified refrigerant recovery. Tires and some electronics carry facility fees.
- Weight outliers — concrete, dirt, roofing shingles, and brick are dense enough that a small pile can max out a trailer's legal weight limit.
A real quote should be given before anyone touches anything, and it shouldn't change unless the scope changes. If a company won't commit to a number until the truck is loaded, that's a red flag.
5. Pull anything you're not sure we take
We handle almost everything non-hazardous. The short list of things that need special handling or that we generally can't take:
- Wet paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides, pool chemicals
- Asbestos-containing material
- Medical or biohazard waste
- Propane tanks and other pressurized cylinders
- Ammunition and explosives
Oklahoma County runs household hazardous waste collection for most of that. If you're not sure whether something qualifies, call and ask — it's a thirty second conversation and it's better than finding out on the day.
6. Know what happens if the job is bigger than expected
Sometimes a garage cleanout reveals a second garage's worth of stuff behind the first row of boxes. It happens constantly. What should happen next is that we stop, tell you what the revised load looks like, and give you a new number before continuing. What should not happen is a surprise on the invoice.
